A cell phone case for reducing cell phone radiation
The Pong iPhone 4 case (Credit: Pong Research) Outside of the battle between iPhone fans and Android advocates, few debates in the cell phone world are more divisive than that over whether the radio frequency (RF) energy emitted by cell phones is harmful. Though the industry and some members of the scientific community insist that there is no danger, other researchers and a growing number of ...

Deutsche Boerse To Distribute Chicago PMI Via In-House Algo Feed
Deutsche Boerse AG (DB1.XE) said Thursday that it would test distribution of a closely watched U.S. economic indicator via its in-house news service.
The German exchange operator in June bought the firm that publishes the Chicago Business Barometer, formerly known as the Chicago PMI, and was widely expected to add the monthly report to its year-old AlphaFlash data and news feed.
Exchange operators are increasingly diversifying into information and technology services, and Deutsche Boerse has been a leader in taking control of data that drives volume, particularly from high-frequency traders.
The German group said it would add the headline September barometer reading to AlphaFlash "for testing purposes", with the rest of the report still distributed by the regular email and conference call.
The report will still be released to all distribution channels simultaneously.
The rise of high-frequency trading strategies has made the rapid dissemination of economic and corporate data a key growth area for news and information groups, including Dow Jones & Co, publisher of this newswire.
Deutsche Boerse acquired Kingsbury International Ltd., which surveys managers for the barometer. Kingsbury partners with the non-profit Institute for Supply Management Chicago in the index's publication.

Options Activity for UBS AG (UBS)
Options traders were heavily trading call contracts during the last trading session establishing a new 3-month call volume record. A total of 15,942 put and 14,107 calls were traded where call contracts outnumbered puts 0.9:1, yielding a 1.13 ratio.
Unusual volume provides reliable clues that the stock is expected to make a move. Investors can use the put/call ratio statistics to measure trader sentiment. A high put/call ratio suggests that the overall investment sentiment is bearish and that investors expect the underlying stock to decrease in value. Conversely, a low put/call ratio implies that investor sentiment is bullish based on the large amount of call options.
UBS AG settled the day down $1.27 to $11.41 in the previous trading session. Yesterday's trading range was between $11.21 and $11.59 respectively. On the volume side, 29,899,788 shares were traded, which is greater than the average volume of 4,860,480 shares. UBS is trading below the 50 day moving average and lower than the 200 day moving average. The stock's 52 week low is $11.53 and 52 week high is $20.08. To date, the stock has lost -35.90% within the last quarter.

Kosovo Serbs block roads at Serb border flashpoints
Kosovo Serbs blocked the roads leading to two disputed border crossings with Serbia early Friday, as Pristina announced it would take control of the posts, local media and witnesses reported.
The Serbs moved their trucks to block the road near the Jarinje border crossing, which had already been closed to traffic by NATO-led peacekeepers KFOR who have manned the post since July unrest in the area, Beta news agency reported.
KFOR soldiers put up barbed wire and traffic barriers near the border post, with signs reading "Stop or we will shoot" in English and Serbian, Beta said, as the stand-off escalated.
At another disputed border crossing, Brnjak, several trucks were parked across the road, with several dozen protestors gathered around, witnesses said.
In New York, a UN peacekeeping chief told a hastily-called UN Security Council meeting on Kosovo that demonstrators had closed one crossing gate and a truck was blocking the road to a second.
Kosovo authorities were unavailable for comment, but prime minister Hashim Thaci had earlier demanded control of the border crossings in Kosovo's Serb-dominated north and has reportedly ordered an operation on Friday, despite Serbia's objections.
Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters that Moscow had information that the operation would be carried out with the assistance of KFOR, and an EU law and order mission, EULEX. Churkin warned that any operation could lead to "bloodshed".
Edmond Mulet, UN assistant secretary general for peacekeeping, gave the Security Council details of the new border tensions.
"Today we were informed that at 9:00 pm local time (Thursday night) gate one was closed by KFOR due to approximately 100 Kosovo Serbs gathered there," Mulet said, referring to Jarinje.
"Although not officially closed, gate 31 has been sealed off by a Kosovo Serb-owned truck completely blocking the road," he added.
Mulet said all public institutions and private businesses will be closed in Serb-dominated northern Kosovo on Friday. Roadblocks had been re-erected at the main bridge which divides the northern city of Mitrovica as well as on main roads in the north.
The official said the United Nations was "very concerned" that any operation at the border posts "could lead to another outbreak of violence" in Kosovo, which is mainly ethnically Albanian.
Beta news agency reported that Serbia's minister for Kosovo, Goran Bogdanovic met with the Serb protestors in Jarinje who informed him they would spent the night at the blockade.
The atmosphere was tense, but calm, it added, without giving a precise number of protestors.
Kosovo Serb leader Branko Ninic told Belgrade TV station b92 that the Serbs had gathered as a precaution.
"We are organised, but only out of precaution. We will not provoke any violence," he said,
On Thursday, Serbian President Boris Tadic called for restraint on all sides.
"I call on both Serbs and Albanians to show restraint and to support a dialogue as the only way to peacefully solve this historic problem," he said.
"There is no problem that cannot be solved through an agreement, including the issue of trade of goods on the administrative crossings," Tadic added.
The clashes in the north erupted in July when the Pristina government dispatched special police to take over the two posts to enforce a ban on imports from Serbia that was imposed in retaliation for an earlier Belgrade ban on goods from Kosovo.
The Serbian ban was imposed in protest at Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence from Belgrade, which Serbia, backed by Russia, has refused to recognise.

Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov ousted from pro-Kremlin party
Billionaire Russian metals tycoon Mikhail Prokhorov promised on Thursday to exact revenge on a top Kremlin official after the businessman was ousted as leader of his own political party.
Prokhorov, 46, Russia's third richest man with an estimated fortune of £11.4bn, accused President Dmitry Medvedev's deputy chief of staff, Vladislav Surkov, of "privatising the political system" and orchestrating his downfall.
In the closest that Moscow has seen to real political drama for several months, it appeared that members of Russia's governing elite had organised the tycoon's exit in order to punish him for refusing to toe the line after he agreed to head the minority Right Cause party in May.
"I will do everything I can so that Surkov the puppeteer leaves his post," Prokhorov said. Surkov is seen as the Kremlin's chief ideologue and the architect of Russia's "managed democracy", who curates loyal political parties and youth groups.
Right Cause projected a liberal, pro-business agenda under Prokhorov's leadership and has been widely seen as a Kremlin-controlled project to create the illusion of political competition in the run up to parliamentary elections in December. These are likely to be dominated by United Russia, the centrist party led by the prime minister, Vladimir Putin.
Prokhorov called a hasty press conference on Wednesday to warn of a mutiny against him within the party, allegedly provoked by Kremlin officials.
Retribution appeared to be swift – he was voted out as leader of the party at its conference in Moscow on Thursday – while he announced his own resignation at a rival meeting.
Prokhorov said that he would seek meetings with Medvedev and Putin, in order to tell them "what happened to the party, how, and show them the necessary documents". The tycoon had sacked senior members of Right Cause, alleging that "clones" of official delegates had turned up at the party's conference with forged documents.
He said that he will create a new political movement but it will not take part in the parliamentary poll. He would also "take a time-out" to consider whether to run as a candidate in presidential elections next March, Prokhorov added.
The businessman, who is president of Onexim Group and owns the New Jersey Nets basketball team, had insisted when he took over Right Cause that he wanted to head an "alternative party of power" rather than an opposition group.
Commentators differed in their interpretations of the confrontation. Many suggested it was a ruse designed by Russia's leadership to create an impression of competition and promote Prokhorov as an independent politician, who may yet be useful as a suitably weak "liberal" candidate in the presidential poll.
Others said there had been a real clash because Prokhorov refused to accept electoral candidates for Right Cause proposed by Surkov, and would not agree to remove Yevgeny Roizman, a politician from the Urals once convicted for theft and fraud.
"The conflict between Surkov and Prokhorov over who would be the alpha male has ended in a schism of Right Cause," political analyst Alexei Mukhin told the Guardian. "In the beginning, the two of them agreed that Prokhorov would have a lot of room for manoeuvre, but in reality it didn't turn out that way.

UPDATE 1-Air France-KLM to order Airbus, Boeing jets worth $12 bln
Air France-KLM split a $12 billion deal to buy long-range jets between rival manufacturers, announcing firm orders on Friday for 25 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 25 Airbus A350s.
The move is part of a fleet renewal plan that Europe's largest airline said could rise to 110 next-generation aircraft including 60 options also placed with the planemakers.
The decision to split the order was widely expected since the French and Dutch flag carriers, which merged in 2004, operate both types of aircraft.
Boeing is delivering its first 787 Dreamliner to Japanese airline ANA next week after three years of delays. Airbus plans to deliver its first A350 mid-decade after earlier delays in design.
Air France-KLM said it aimed to operate 73 of the 250-300 seat aircraft through 2024, including 43 Airbus A350-900 and 30 Boeing 787-9 models.
The first Boeing 787-9 will enter into service with KLM in 2016 and the first Airbus A350-900 with Air France in 2018.
"Later, both airlines will operate both types of aircraft," the carrier said in a statement. The airlines merged in 2004 but maintain separate networks.
Final details of the order are still being negotiated.
The firm part of the order for 50 aircraft is worth $6.7 billion to Airbus and $5.5 billion to Boeing, according to list prices. Airlines usually obtain significant discounts.
Air France-KLM had been weighing the order for at least a year and indicated in June it would follow United Airlines in splitting the order between Airbus and Boeing.
The plane order guarantees business for Britain's Rolls-Royce to provide power for the A350-900, for which it makes the only engines currently on offer.
But industry sources say rival General Electric is front-runner to power the Boeing 787s, for which it competes with Rolls-Royce. Air France traditionally buys long-range engines from the U.S. company.
Shares in Air France-KLM were up 1.4 percent at 6.15 euros in early trade. Shares in Airbus parent EADS were 0.8 percent firmer at 22.44 euros.

Many Atlanta fans still rooting for Michael Vick
The Atlanta Falcons host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night, and Michael Vick will be back in the house, the same house he left ransacked four years ago. The game is just a froth that needs to be skimmed to get at all the feverish storylines. Vick vs. the Falcons, vs. Matt Ryan, vs. Vick's past, vs. could-have-would have-should have.
Callers to local talk radio stammer and are left breathless trying to make their argument. This quarrel among the football family in Atlanta was being settled with the rawness of texting and Twitter, and the open vent of talk radio. Kent in Cumming: "I hope John Abraham and Ray Edwards knock Michael Vick's head off. Michael Vick turned his back on the fans and (owner) Arthur Blank."
Richard in Fairburn: "Matt Ryan has not made much of a jump since his rookie season. This guy is slightly above average." Horace in Atlanta: "(Vick) got more criticism than he deserved here. If he had the talent (around him) Matt Ryan has right now, they (Falcons) would have won the Super Bowl." The NFL cannot wheel enough spotlights into the Georgia Dome. Vick's resurrection brings rapid response, with drama pouring from the spigot.
Once upon a time, Vick was the $130 million quarterback of the Falcons who was going to guide Atlanta to a Super Bowl. Now, he is the $100 million quarterback of the Eagles who is going to guide Philadelphia to a Super Bowl. His pained road to redemption, which included a 19-month prison sentence for his role in a dogfighting ring that left him nearly penniless, leads here next. People can't wait. Vick, 31, is a new man with the same old spectacular talent of fast feet and strong arm that made him the No.1 pick in the 2001 draft.
Tuesday morning on 790 The Zone, a morning drive-time sports radio show, the hosts blew through one hour of talk time with callers at a brisk pace. The topic was all Vick. One caller suggested Ryan, who is 33-14 as a starter, is a bust at 26 for being 0-2 in postseason games. Another said the Falcons would be better off with Vick than Ryan, even though Ryan has led 13 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter.
Callers said they would wear their black-and-red No.7 jerseys into the dome Sunday and root for Vick and the Falcons at the same time. That seems preposterous, except for the fact fans did that two seasons ago when Vick was the backup to Donovan McNabb. Adoring fans gathered at one end of the Georgia Dome on Dec.6, 2009, to cheer him after Vick finished a 34-7 rout of the Falcons, who played without the injured Ryan.
What will make things even more testy is that the Falcons, pegged as a Super Bowl contender, were waxed by the Chicago Bears 30-12 in their season opener. "It's a big deal — a big deal," NFL Network analyst Jamie Dukes, an offensive lineman for the Falcons from 1986 to '93 and a resident of Atlanta, says of Vick's return. "And it's heightened by the fact that the Falcons didn't play so well last week — (they're at) a level of desperation in some people's minds.
"… There's a faction of fans here who will always be Vick fans — could be 10-20,000 of them (at the dome) on Sunday." Who dares root for the enemy under these circumstances? "Can you wear a Vick jersey on Sunday night and still root for the Falcons to win?" asked Chris Dimino, a host with 790 The Zone. "That was the gist of what we heard. Some have said, 'I am a Falcons fan, but I am also a Vick fan and I want him to do well.' There are others who have flat-out said they want Vick to win."
For his part, Vick knows his is the visitor's parking spot. "It's not my house; that's Matt Ryan's house," he said in a conference call Wednesday. Yet Vick is not about to surrender any of his fame here. He will look up Sunday and see his No.7 jerseys, probably in the same row as fans wearing Ryan's No.2. "It's a plus for me and motivation for Ryan to play better," Vick said of the conflicting emotions. "Fans are allowed to like as many quarterbacks as they want. I think it's a good thing for both of us."
Says Ryan, in his fourth year as the Falcons' starter: "Certainly, Mike was a great player down here and did some fantastic things and is going to have support from people in this city. But I really feel like we've had great support the last three years that I've been down here and it's been a lot of fun to play down here."
A friend of the family
The Falcons seem to have bigger things to worry about than the return of Vick. Atlanta played poorly against the Bears, and there was cleaning up to do to prepare for the Eagles, who bashed the injury-riddled St. Louis Rams 31-13. "We kind of understand what everybody else is thinking at this time, but we can't get wrapped up in that," Ryan said.
Yet, in the Falcons locker room Monday, veteran defensive end John Abraham did not roll his eyes at a Vick question. Abraham just smiled. He appears happy for Vick and seems to be glad to talk about him. "He went through a lot," Abraham said. "It showed a lot of character. There were a lot of people wishing him bad."
Linebacker Mike Peterson also stood up for Vick.
"I was hoping he would come back. I was rooting for him," Peterson said. "Why wouldn't you be happy for him? Anybody who goes through a situation like that, why couldn't you be happy for them? You do your crime, you do your time, and get past it."
Blank does not reveal any leftover animosity, even for all the money and goodwill that was wasted on Vick. Blank said he will seek out Vick on the field. The owner sounds charitable and at ease with a man who squandered millions while robbing his franchise of its most identifiable player and setting back its Super Bowl aspirations.
"I'm looking forward to seeing him," said Blank, whose son Joshua, now 14, used to play video games with Vick at the Blank home. "People say he has paid his price and say he is entitled to an opportunity, but it is more than that. People can pay a price and not change. I think with Michael he did pay a price in every way and he has changed. People can be redeemed."
The popularity game
When Bob Pressley of BP Sports Collectibles in Marietta, Ga., held a memorabilia show here last February that featured Vick and Ryan, Vick had his supporters and Ryan had his. The big difference is Vick drew rubberneckers and fans who already had their Vick merchandise. Ryan drew new fans and he signed more memorabilia. Vick is no longer an economic engine in Atlanta.
"You will have to call somebody in Philadelphia to see what's going on there with sales, they could be doing well," Pressley said, "but the Vick people were not buying here. They already have his stuff. From the memorabilia standpoint, it has thinned out with him. There were some screaming girls, but did he do better than Matt Ryan? No. They wanted to come in and see Michael, but not plunk down money."
Ten years ago, Pressley said, Vick was a must-have. You bought him, over and over. Now, it is not about having Vick's stuff, it's about pulling people off the pile that engulfed him after his conviction. "It's Michael Vick, people would love it here if he came back for real with the Falcons," said Cedric Nettles, 17, a football player at Jonesboro High School.
Nettles and his brother, Shikael Villaflor, were watching a Braves game at Turner Field on Monday night and said they have no intention of forgetting Vick. "I still have the jersey," Villaflor said.

Will Mayweather Vs. Ortiz Deliver Better Quality Fights Than UFC This Weekend?
This weekend the UFC goes head to head with the only opponent left that can still hit back - professional boxing. Unfortunately for mixed martial arts fans, it's a bit of a mismatch. In the blue corner is Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr, one of boxing's best, a star as famous for his 24/7 hijinks and talk show appearances as he is for his beautiful craft in the ring. And in the red corner? Jake "Who" Ellenberger and Jake "Wait, isn't the other guy named Jake" Shields.
As you can see, it's a fight the UFC has already conceded. The UFC is on a mission to build new stars on free television, using Jon Jones on Versus and even booking title fights on cable. Not this time. They made the mistake of going head to head with Mayweather once before. In September 2009 Mayweather's fight with Juan Manuel Marquez destroyed UFC 103 at the box office.
Mayweather earned more than a million buys on pay-per-view while the UFC limped to the finish line with less than 400,000 buys. Before the bouts, many in the boxing community were projecting around 600,000 buys for "Money" Mayweather. Instead he exceeded all expectations and the UFC was careful never to cross promotional paths with Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao again. The UFC may win the overall PPV battle in 2011, but they want no part of boxing's biggest draws in direct competition.
Mayweather is a star and a brilliant fighter. His opponent Victor Ortiz is the kind of aggressive young fighter a promoter dreams of. Not only that, Ortiz is a hard charging southpaw who often overwhelms opponents with power punches. Sound familiar? It should. Many consider Ortiz a stylistic warmup for Floyd prior to a fight with Pacquiao in 2012.
Not that this bout is a glorified squash. Ortiz is younger, stronger, and naturally bigger. He's also overcome tremendous adversity in his life, surviving hard times that would make even the most mentally strong break. If he manages the upset, it's a great feel good story, the birth of a star.
In the cage, the UFC will be represented by two fighters who on occasion have faced considerable criticism for their cautious style. Shields, especially, is noted for a game plan that values position over all else. He failed to draw an audience on network television, and an attempt to help the UFC gain traction leading into their new deal on Fox seems destined to fail as well. Shields, unlike most fighters positioned in main events has actually lost viewers during his bouts, rare in a sport that sees ratings build to a main event peak.
The prefight buzz for this bout is non existent. Shields has been understandably out of the public eye since the death of his father in August and Ellenberger is doing his level best to minimize interest. In an interview with Fight Hub TV he called Shields "just another guy" before going on to suggest that his opponent wasn't even as good as some of the unknowns he'd fought on the UFC undercard (HT: Fight Opinion):
I mean, honestly, I think Carlos Rocha, the guy I beat back in February, I think he was more dangerous than Jake Shields.
Comments like this beg the question - if Ellenberger can't even get excited for a fight with Shields, why should anyone else care? This is a promotional strategy that works for no one. If Ellenberger does pull of the win, so what? He's just explained why it's meaningless - after all, per Ellenberger, Shields isn't even any good. A smart fighter builds his opponent up. Even if he knows in his heart of hearts the guy is a bum, he keeps that to himself. It looks better to wax a star than it does to dust a bum.
Of course, boxing often wins the battle of the main events. There's something epic about a boxing headliner that doesn't really translate to MMA. Where boxing typically falls short is in the overall presentation. The UFC has done a good job convincing fans that all of the fights matter, giving the undercard, even one stocked with no names and fighters with no legitimate pro prospects, added significance.
That's not the case this weekend. Not only does boxing handily win the main event, it wins the undercard battle too. SBNation's boxing blog Bad Left Hook breaks down the undercard action and admits that this has the potential to be a great event:
There are things to complain about with this card, but the fights themselves really should be good. You may want to hate -- I admit I kind of wanted to -- but the trio of undercard bouts could see a ton of toe-to-toe action leading into an intriguing main event between an aging superstar who is a once-in-a-generation talent and a potential next generation superstar who seems to have found himself as a welterweight. If this card even gets close to living up to its overall potential, it could be a hell of a night of fights.
In the end, boxing scores a first round knockout by virtue of its stellar main event, superb undercard, and savvy marketing. The UFC however, will put up a better fight in November when their debut on Fox goes against Manny Pacquiao. For the first time since UFC 103, the promotion is preparing to go head to head with boxing's best. That's a battle that might go to the final bell - should be interesting to see.

Jakarta Gets Climate Reality Check
For one hour on Thursday, Jakarta found itself in the environmental spotlight of a 24-hour effort to bring attention to the dangers posed by global climate change.
Dubbed “24 Hours of Reality,” at 7 p.m. in every time zone across the globe, one presenter in cities from New Delhi to New York to Cape Verde spoke to attendees and was beamed around the world live via the Web site of the Climate Reality Project, the group organizing the event.
Manning the helm in Jakarta was Charles Wiriawan, a West Java native who serves as program manager for a local environmental group.
Dozens of people filled the @america cultural center in Pacific Place mall, where Wiriawan described some of the effects the planet is already seeing and might expect in the future. He recounted record heat, droughts and flooding experienced across the globe in recent years.
The effort was the brainchild of Nobel laureate and former US Vice President Al Gore, who brought new prominence to the climate change issue with the Oscar-winning 2006 documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.”
The event is part of a larger push by Gore’s Climate Reality Project to push back at “climate deniers” — those who question the legitimacy of the science that indicates man is contributing to global warming.
For Indonesia, a nation of some 17,000 islands stretched across 5,000 kilometers of the equator, the ramifications of climate change are significant — and potentially devastating. Wiriawan said he and more than 200 other Indonesian messengers personally trained by Gore hoped to raise public awareness of the issue.
As important, he said, is framing climate change though a local lens. For Jakarta, that means linking increasingly frequent flooding with a Jakarta constant — traffic congestion — to induce “big lifestyle changes” aimed at reducing individuals’ carbon footprints.
“We need to stop thinking that everybody has to own a car or motorcycle, and start to think of how to create a better mass transport system, bicycles even,” he said, pointing out the debilitating effect the February 2007 floods had on the city’s transportation and commerce.
The “24 Hours of Reality” event was broadcast in 13 languages, including Bahasa Indonesia. At press time, more than 3.3 million people had tuned into the livestream online.
Despite grim forecasts and much work to do, Wiriawan said he was hopeful.
“Human nature is kind, and our nature is also to preserve our nature,” he said. “We just need to make people realize that.”
Jakarta native and event attendee John Andri agreed that the issue was of particular relevance for the region. “It’s especially important for all of this part of Asia, because we are growing and we are low-lying,” he said.
