Geoffrey Mutai from Kenya won the marathon Sunday in New York in two hours, five minutes and six seconds, beating his compatriot Emmanuel Mutai and Ethiopian Tsegaye Kebede.
Geoffrey Mutai has set a new record in passing the New York marathon, lowering it by more than two minutes and 30 seconds compared to the previous record of the Ethiopian Tesfaye Jifar in 2001.
Geoffrey Mutai concludes a successful year 2011. He won the Boston Marathon last April in two hours, three minutes and two seconds, the fastest time on marathon. But the International Association of Athletics Federation (IIAF) had not approved this record because of the layout of the course.
The Ethiopian Firehiwot Dabo won among women in two hours 23 minutes and 15 seconds. Another Ethiopian, Buzunesh Deba, finished second, the Kenyan Mary Keitany taking third place.
